Elementary I

"Through manual activity the child reaches a higher level of intelligence; whoever has worked with his own hands has a stronger character. My experience has shown that if for some particularities of the environment, the child cannot make use of his hands, his character remains at a very low level, he remains incapable of obedience or initiative, and becomes lazy and sad, while the child who has been able to work with his hands shows a marked development and force of character."
The Absorbant Mind-Dr. Maria Montessori

The Elementary I Program prepares adults to work with students from 6-9 years of age. Classes meet for the Academic Phase at the Kopecky Montessori Elementary School and Millard Montclair Public Montessori School. This program consists of an eight week summer academic session on campus, with 18 hours of seminar during the practicum phase. “Elementary students without Montessori Early Childhood 3-6 training from a MACTE approved training center must attend the Introduction to Montessori Overview", now available as an approved online course for 3 hours of graduate credit and may be used towards a Masters Degree from UNK in Curriculum and Instruction. Elementary students also have the option of registering for Geography/History, Biology/Physical Science and Integrative Arts as online courses. The remaining 5 weeks will be required on campus. If a student or faculty do not find the student has successfully demonstrated the required skills of a certified Montessori teacher, the student may attend the on-campus classes again at no additional cost.

Elementary students without Montessori Early Childhood 3 - 6 training from a MACTE accredited institution must attend the Introduction to Montessori Overview, * scheduled to be held June 2-13, 2008.
